Ruby and Music

by nick on December 1st, 2009

The latter half of my day was far more interesting than the first.

I finally rode for a bit today, though it was on the trainer. I enjoyed 2/3 of an episode of Glee. It is my favorite show at the moment. Community is second, but just barely. I am so out of shape that my heart rate didn’t even go up. Tomorrow I’ll wear the heart rate monitor to keep an eye on that.

After showering (since I was heading out), I went to church to prep for practice. At 5:30 I headed downtown for my second (ever!) GR Ruby users group meeting. Zach gave a great talk on CouchDB. I haven’t heard a ton of talks, but he did a great job. It was great to see a lot of guys I have spent far too little time with. Grand Rapids has a great community of developers.

After enjoying dinner and the talk, I headed back to church for band practice. I wasn’t quite prepared (I really need to fix that) and we didn’t start until 8:30. The practice went pretty well for the hour that it lasted, though I was a little chatty and easily distracted. For example, when I snap (my fingers) it is almost exactly an A. I used that to find a C, then to see how I did with O Holy Night in C. It only hits an E, so it’s not too bad… as long as I don’t try to jump up to the G. Which I did. See, distracted.

I only needed a couple of “focus!” comments to get through practice. Everyone was nice and I didn’t waste too much time. I’m not a great leader, but sometimes I’m worse. I think it was all the excitement of cycling, ruby, and a new coat.
